Just one month after ABC cancelled the Roseanne reboot over Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett, the network declared that they would be replacing the show with The Conners, a spin-off of the 2018 revival. Here’s what we know so far about what’s to come for Dan, Jackie, and the rest of the Conner crew:
Fans of Roseanne don’t have to wait too long to get their Conner fix. The famous family is returning to ABC in the US on October 16th. New episodes will continue to air on Tuesday nights at the same time throughout the fall.
A lot of the original cast is returning.
Don’t worry, Dan and Jackie fans. Both John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf are reprising their roles. Other definite returns include Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, and Michael Fishman.
Roseanne Barr will not be part of the spin-off (clearly..)
After Roseanne got canceled, ABC declared that the creator and star of the original series would have “no financial or creative involvement in the new series.” In terms of how they’re going to deal with Roseanne’s absence on the show, details are scant but Deadline reports that the series will start off after a “sudden turn of events.” Of course, that could mean anything, which explains why fans are already spinning up all sorts of theories about the matriarch’s send-off.
As if there weren’t enough questions about the future of the show already, the first official teaser (above) of The Conner’s prompts even more mystery. The 15-second video features no characters – just a shot of the famous Conner living room with the words “What’s Next?” appearing at the end while Carly Simon’s song “Anticipation”plays in the background. Anticipation, indeed.
The Conner’s will still tackle hot-topic issues.
Just because Roseanne is out of the picture doesn’t mean the new show is going to shy away from controversy. In the 2018 reboot, Roseanne wasn’t afraid to confront uncomfortable topics head on, including the 2016 election, opioid crisis, parenting, immigration, and bigotry. As ABC announced, the new program will be no different.
The network’s statement reads:
The Conner’s stories demonstrate that families can always find common ground through conversation, laughter, and love. The spin-off will continue to portray contemporary issues that are as relevant today as they were 30 years ago.
As for The Conner’s next chapter, the family will have to deal with dating, an unexpected pregnancy, financial pressures, ageing and in-laws according to Deadline.
The Conner’s will Premier on ABC in the US October 16th
